Mission, Goals and Objectives

Misson
The Trinidad and Tobago Occupational Therapy Association exists to support member practitioners, represent their interests and those of their service users by influencing national policy, developing the workforce, leading innovation in occupational therapy practice and research, and promoting the importance of occupation as a route to and outcome of health and wellbeing.


Goals
  • To influence national policy
    • Raise awareness among individuals, health care providers, policy makers, programme planners and Regional Health Authorities of the value of occupational therapy.
    • Advocate for and assist in recruitment of adequate numbers of occupational therapists to fill employment vacancies in public and private sectors in all practice areas.
    • Collaborate with the boards of other professions related to medicine and the Ministry of Health to re-vitalize the Council of Professions Related to Medicine.
    • Have a voice and contribute to research, and policy making for delivery of public health and social services.
  • To develop the workforce
    • Support professional development of members by providing continuing education opportunities, and facilitating mentorship and supervision as required.
    • Promote occupational therapy as a career option among secondary school students and educators.
    • Participate in the Association of Caribbean Occupational Therapists Scientific Conference in Jamaica in 2009.
    • Collaborate with the Regional Health Authorities and private health and education institutions to recruit adequate numbers of occupational therapists to meet the population needs.
  • To lead innovation in occupational therapy practice and research
    • Maintain a website promoting the application of evidence in practice and supporting excellence in practice. www.ttota.com
    • Form collaborative initiatives with agencies that lead to innovative occupational therapy service delivery models.
  • To promote the importance of occupation as a route to and outcome of health and wellbeing
    • Utilize national media (print and broadcast) and the internet to raise public awareness of the value of occupation and its impact on the state of health and wellbeing.


The Objectives of the Association
  • To act as the official organization for the promotion of Occupational Therapy in Trinidad and Tobago.
  • To promote occupational therapy by increasing awareness of Occupational Therapy in governmental and non-governmental organizations.
  • To promote co-operation among Occupational Therapists and to liaise with other related professional bodies and governmental organizations in Trinidad and Tobago and worldwide.
  • To maintain the ethics of the profession and to advance the practice and standards of Occupational Therapy in Trinidad and Tobago.
  • To establish and promote Occupational Therapy training programmes in Trinidad and Tobago at assistant, basic, and post graduate levels, and to provide continuing education.
  • To advocate for and assist in recruitment of Occupational Therapists to fill employment vacancies in public and private sectors in all practice areas.
  • To maintain a registry of members.
  • To facilitate the exchange of information and publications between Occupational Therapist and other related professional bodies and governmental bodies and to promote research in Occupational Therapy.
  • To be involved in matters where Occupational Therapy expertise can contribute to policy making in general preventative, curative and rehabilitative health matters in the private and public sectors in Trinidad and Tobago.
  • To raise funds through legal means to further the development of the profession.
